Surgical Orthodontics

Surgical Orthodontics (Orthognathic Surgery)

Surgical orthodontics, also called orthognathic surgery, is a specialized treatment for severe bite issues, jaw abnormalities, and malocclusion that can’t be corrected with braces alone. This procedure involves collaboration between your orthodontist and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon — a dental specialist trained to handle complex surgeries involving the mouth, jaw, face, and skull.

When is Surgical Orthodontics Needed?

Surgical orthodontics is usually recommended for adults whose jaws have finished growing (around age 16 for females and 18 for males) but who still have bite problems or jaw misalignment that can’t be fixed with orthodontics alone. Surgery helps properly align the jaws, while braces are used before and after surgery to position the teeth perfectly.

How Do I Know if I Need Surgery?

Your orthodontist will evaluate your bite and jaw alignment and let you know if orthognathic surgery is necessary as part of your treatment plan.

What to Expect During Surgery

Orthognathic surgery is performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in a hospital setting. The procedure can take several hours depending on the complexity of your case. After surgery, you’ll need several weeks to recover, so plan to take time off work or school. Once healed, your orthodontist will continue treatment to fine-tune your bite with braces, typically worn for 6 to 12 months post-surgery. Finally, you’ll wear a retainer to maintain your new smile.

Are There Risks?

As with any major surgery, there are risks involved, but orthognathic surgery has been safely performed for many years. If you have concerns or questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to support you every step of the way.

The Benefits

The reward of orthognathic surgery is a healthy, functional bite and a beautiful smile that lasts a lifetime. It can improve not only your appearance but also your confidence and oral health for years to come.
